The Wilshire Theatre was at first named the Fox Wilshire, opening on September 19, 1930. It was intended by Architect Charles Lee. The art deco auditorium and lobby were bedecked in silver and black with coral draperies and seats, a scheme credited in the opening program to Fox West Coast general manager Harold B. Franklin. In adding to the main organ, one of several cobbled up for Fox by Louis Maas and pipe maker Archie Marsh, the lobby for a time sported an Estey Minuette, a 2/3 portable organ worked into what looked similar to a large grand piano case. Renovated in 1981, the house is now a stage venue. Originally the "Fox Wilshire" theatre, the 1920's Art Deco structure is a classic Los Angeles landmark. Formerly one of Fox's premier theaters, it has been over 20 years through movies were shown at the Wilshire. Nowaday is regularly used as a live performance venue.
On November 4, 1953, Marilyn Monroe was in the middle of the luminaries who attended the premiere of How To Marry A Millionaire, too starring Lauren Bacall. That film was only the second to be filmed in Cinemascope. On December 25th of that year, Walt Disney exhibit Grand Canyonscope, the first Donald Duck cartoon in Cinemascope, showing with the studio’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. On November 15, 1960, a particular showing of G.I. Blues, starring Elvis Presley, took place; among the attendees were Cesar Romero and Ronald Regan. In the early 1970s, the Fox Wilshire hosted the elite engagement of the film, Woodstock, which was then careful outrageous.
Billy Crystal brings his 2005 Tony Award-winning Broadway blockbuster to Southern California for a limited appointment. 700 Sundays, an autobiographical journey, is an original two-act play in which Billy plays many characters that have influenced who he is today the 700 Sundays is now playing at the Wilshire Theater. The 700 Sundays deals with his youth, growing up in the jazz world of Manhattan, his teenage years, and lastly adulthood. It is about family and fate.
